1936 American League All-Star Team-Signed Ball with Gehrig, Foxx, and DiMaggio (Rookie Season)

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in black fountain pen by the following twenty-three members of the 1936 American League All-Star team: Lou Gehrig (sweet spot, “7”), Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin (coach), Rick Ferrell, Goose Goslin, Joe McCarthy (Mgr., secretarial), Bill Dickey, Lefty Grove, Lefty Gomez, Charlie Gehringer, Joe DiMaggio, Earl Averill, Ben Chapman, Mel Harder, George Selkirk, Monte Pearson, Schoolboy Rowe, Pinky Higgins, Rollie Helmsley, Vern Kennedy, Rip Radcliff, Frankie Crosetti, and Art Fletcher (coach). The fact that the keys of Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx by chance can be viewed at the same time when displayed make this a particularly exceptional early All-Star team ball. There is one additional signature on the ball that is partially illegible and cannot be identified (first name is “Dave,” last name is difficult to read). Aside from DiMaggio’s signature, which is faint (grading “2”), the signatures range in grade from “4” to “9,” averaging “7.” This is a remarkably complete ball that features every member of the team and coaching staff with the exception of Luke Appling. The 1936 midsummer classic, played at Braves Field in Boston, marked the first All-Star Game win for the National League, as they bested their American League rivals by a score of 4-3. Gehrig had a solo home run for the American League in the loss but his teammate Joe DiMaggio, who was playing in his first All-Star Game, had a much tougher time; going hitless in five at bats. The ball is moderately toned and appears to have been coated with an extremely light layer of protective shellac. All of the manufacturer’s labels are bold and distinct. Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
