Roderick Wallace, Ray Schalk, and Sam Rice Signed Hall of Fame Black-and-White Postcards (3)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,292.50

This collection of three signed Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards is highlighted by the inclusion of a rare Roderick Wallace example. Incredibly, we actually discovered these three signed cards during the processing of a large collection of unsigned black-and-white postcards (offered elswhere in this auction). Our consignor, a collector for many decades, had no idea these three signed gems were among his Hall of Fame postcards! 1) Wallace has signed the Artvue card “Roderick J. Wallace” in blue fountain pen on the front, and has also added the inscription, “Thank you Loren and all Good Wishes – R. J. W.,” on the reverse. The front signature grades “7.” The reverse inscription is extremely bold and grades “9/10.” Wallace was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953 and passed away in 1960, leaving collectors just a short seven-year “window” in which to obtain his signature on a Hall of Fame postcard. The postcard has a tiny crease in the lower right corner and three stray pencil notations on the reverse. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. 2-3) Sam Rice and Ray Schalk have signed the remaining two Artvue cards, respectively. Rice has signed his card in black ink on the front. Although the signature is quite bold, grading “9,” the placement of it in the center of the card (his normal area of signing) has resulted in its contrasting poorly against the dark background. Schalk has inscribed his card in blue ink, “To Charles – Chicago Apr 29th=63,” along the top border. At the bottom he has added “Sincerely Ray Schalk.” Both the inscription and signature grade “10.” The Rice and Schalk signed cards each have minor pencil notations on the reverse and are otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Total 3 signed black-and-white Hall of Fame postcards. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
