Signed Black-and-White Hall of Fame Postcard Collection (27)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,112.50

Signed Baseball Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards have always been held in extremely high esteem by collectors. Offered here is a phenomenal collection of twenty-seven signed black-and-white Hall of Fame postcards representing twenty-two different players. Signed examples of these postcards are not only rare but also very limited in terms of potentially available players. Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards were only produced during the twenty-year period 1944 to 1963. During that span, postcards for ninety-four Hall of Fame members were issued, including many players who were elected posthumously. Of the ninety-four black-and white postcards issued, only fifty were produced during the lifetime of the respective Hall of Fame player. Thus, a complete collection of signed Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards numbers only fifty. Today, Bob Feller is the only living Hall of Fame player that can be found on a Hall of Fame black-and-white postcard. The offered collection represents forty-four percent of all possible signed black-and-white Hall of Fame postcards in the set. This is a tremendous high-quality group, rarely found in such a significant offering, featuring nearly half the complete set of potentially signed cards. Unless otherwise noted, all of the cards are Artvue cards that have been signed in blue ink on the front, with the signatures grading “9” or “10.” The collection is comprised of Max Carey (three examples, two are personalized to different individuals, one is Ex-Mt, one has been slightly trimmed along the top border, otherwise Ex, and the third has tape residue on the reverse borders from having once been mounted, otherwise Ex), Sam Crawford (two examples, one is signed in red felt-tip pen and has tape residue on the reverse borders from having once been mounted, otherwise Ex, the second is also dated and inscribed on the reverse “March 16, 63 – To John, With all good wishes – Wahoo Sam,” Ex-Mt), Joe Cronin (Ex-Mt), Bill Dickey (blue Sharpie, Nr-Mt), Joe DiMaggio (black marker, Vg-Ex), Bob Feller (two examples, one Nr-Mt, the other Ex), Frankie Frisch (two examples, one inscribed “The Old Flash – Frankie Frisch,” Ex, the other with minor adhesive residue on the reverse from having once been mounted, otherwise, Nr-Mt), Charlie Gehringer (Nr-Mt), Hank Greenberg (Ex-Mt), Lefty Grove (Ex-Mt), Gabby Hartnett (personalized “To Douglas,” Nr-Mt), Carl Hubbell (signature boldly penned directly in the center of the card but contrasts poorly against the dark background, Ex), Ted Lyons (black felt-tip pen, date stamped on the reverse “Aug 20 1981,” Ex), Connie Mack (signed on the reverse in blue fountain pen, adhesive residue on both the front and reverse from having once been mounted, otherwise Ex), Joe McCarthy (“8,” Ex-Mt), Bill McKechnie (Ex-Mt), Sam Rice (signature penned in black ink directly in the center of the card but contrasts poorly against the dark background, “8,” addressed and mailed, tape residue on the reverse from having once been mounted, otherwise Vg-Ex), Edd Roush (Ex-Mt), Ray Schalk (Vg-Ex), George Sisler (very slight amount of adhesive residue on the reverse from having once been mounted, otherwise Ex), Bill Terry (Ex-Mt), Zach Wheat (tape residue on the reverse borders from having once been mounted, otherwise Nr-Mt). The SMR value on this collection is $7,385. LOA (11 of the 27 have individual certs.) from James Spence/JSA. Total: 27 signed postcards (22 different players). Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
