1940 Babe Ruth Signed Check Payable to Claire Ruth - PSA MINT 9

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,112.50

Babe Ruth personal checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that Ruth’s signature is always well executed. The offered example is an ideal Ruth check, but is exceptional both in terms of condition and due to the fact that this check is made out in Ruth’s hand payable to his wife, Claire Ruth. Thus, the check features two “Ruth” signatures. The check, dated May 25, 1940, is made out to “Claire Ruth” in the amount of $1,000 and boldly signed “G. H. Ruth” in black fountain pen (grading “9/10”). The check, which is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, has been filled out entirely in Ruth’s hand, with the other “Ruth” signature also grading “9/10.” Ruth’s preprinted name appears along the left margin. Claire has not endorsed the check, but the bank stamp on the reverse reads, “Credited to account of within named payee. Absence of endorsement guaranteed.” Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. This is an outstanding Ruth check in all respects, and all the more desirable for the fact that it is made out to his wife. The check has been encapsulated and the signature graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, none of which affect Ruth’s main signature, as well as a few light vertical folds. Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
