1947 Babe Ruth Signed Check (Signed by Babe Ruth and Claire Ruth)

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $4,993.75

Bank check, dated August 11, 1947, signed by both Babe Ruth and his wife Claire in their capacity as trustees. The check, made out to “Cash” in the amount of $100.00 and drawn on The Chase National Bank of the City of New York, has been signed in blue ink on the front by “George Herman Ruth” and also by “Claire Ruth.” Both signatures are boldly scripted and graded “9/10.” A typed notation on the front reads, “George Herman Ruth and Claire Ruth, As Trustees Under Trust Indenture Dated 7/31/47.” Written in pencil on the reverse of the check is the notation “House hold expenses in Babe’s absence.” Ruth, who was suffering from throat cancer at the time of this check, was in and out of hospitals in 1947. Just four months earlier he was honored at Yankee Stadium on “Babe Ruth Day,” where he gave a poignant goodbye speech to his fans that began, “Thank you very much, ladies and gentleman. You know how bad my voice sounds. Well it feels just as bad…” A small 1 x 1-inch color reproduction of Ruth’s 1933 Sport Kings card has been affixed to the upper left corner. The check (8.5 x 3 inches) displays two vertical folds, a spindle hole, and two tiny border tears, as well as normal bank cancellation stamps and perforations. This is a particularly rare and unusual style Ruth check, signed by Claire Ruth and signed by Babe with a rare full "George Herman Ruth" signature. Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,993.75
