1948 Jackie Robinson Signed Check in Framed Display
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50
Extremely early Jackie Robinson personal check, dated September 10, 1948, signed by "Jackie Robinson" in black ink (grading "9/10") along the base. This check dates from Robinson's second season with the Dodgers and, ideally, features his more desirable full name ("Jackie") signature. Most Robinson checks circulating in the hobby today date from his post-playing career days, and are signed simply "Jack Robinson." It is rare to find a Robinson check dating from the heart of his career, especially dating from the 1940s. The check, drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, features Robinson's preprinted name along the top and has been made out to clothier "Abraham Straus Inc." in the amount of $64.55. It was just the previous day, on September 9, 1948, that the Brooklyn Dodgers' Rex Barney no-hit the New York Giants, 2-0. There was no game on September 10th. Apparently Jackie took some time to buy a suit on his day off. Aside from normal bank cancellation holes and stamps, the check (8 x 3 inches) is in Excellent to Mint condition. It has been beautifully mounted and framed together with an 8 x 10-inch non-vintage color photo of Robinson and a commemorative plaque. Total dimensions: 27 x 18 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
