1948 Jackie Robinson Signed Check in Framed Display
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $940.00
Extremely early Jackie Robinson personal check dating from his second season with the Dodgers in 1948. The check, dated August 2, 1948, features Robinson's preprinted name along the top and is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York. It is made out to "Bordens" in the amount of $10.44 and is signed "Jackie Robinson" in blue ink (grading "10") along the base. Robinson's full-name signature on this check makes it both rare and desirable. Most Robinson checks circulating in the hobby today date from his post-playing career days, and are signed simply "Jack Robinson." It is rare to find a Robinson check dating from the heart of his career, especially one from the 1940s. The Dodgers hosted Chicago at Ebbets Field on Monday August 2, 1948, where a crowd of 18,368 witnessed their beloved "Bums" drop a 4-2 decision to the Cubs. Aside from normal bank cancellation holes and stamps, the check (8 x 3 inches) has a tiny area of light discoloration (not affecting the signature), as well as normal bank cancellation holes and stamps. Excellent condition. Mounted and framed together with an 12.5 x 8.5-inch non-vintage black-and-white photo of Robinson, to total dimensions of 18.25 x 18.25 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $940.00
