1956 Mickey Mantle Signed Book Contract
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50
This one-page typed letter, regarding book royalties, dates from Mantle’s triple-crown season of 1956 and has been signed by Mantle in blue ink (grading “10”). The letter, which serves to amend a previous agreement, is dated October 2, 1956, and addressed to Henry Holt & Company, Incorporated, publisher of The Mickey Mantle Story by Mickey Mantle and Ben Epstein. In full: Gentleman: Please be advised that you are hereby authorized to make all payments of Royalties in connection with the book, ‘The Mickey Mantle Story’ to Mr. Abram Friedman, as attorney, whose address is 18 East 41st Street, New York 17, N. Y. The undersigned have agreed that all distributions of royalties to which they are entitled to, shall be taken care of by Mr. Friedman, and he has agreed to make such distributions. This letter is intended as a modification of your agreement with Mickey Mantle and Ben Epstein, dated November 7, 1952, in which payments of Royalties were agreed to be made to Murray A. Kaufman, and the only change effected is the payment to Abram Friedman, as attorney, instead of to Murray A. Kaufman. Murray Kaufman has also signed the letter. A typed addendum to the text appears along the base. Mantle enjoyed the greatest season of his career in 1956, capturing the American League Triple Crown by virtue of his league-leading totals of 52 home runs, 130 RBI, and a .353 batting average. The Mickey Mantle Story was published three years earlier, in 1953, but, as evidenced by this letter, Mantle’s banner season probably kept the book on the bestseller list all summer, thereby generating additional royalties for Mantle. This letter also dates one day before the start of the 1956 World Series between the Yankees and Dodgers. Mantle hit three home runs in the Series to help the Yankees capture their fifth World Championship of the decade. The letter (8.5 x 11 inches) displays five light horizontal folds and a number of staple holes along the top. Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
