1954 Milwaukee Braves Player Contracts - Team Archive of 40 Different Contracts including Adcock, Burdette, Crandall, and Pafko
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,763
Collection of forty original 1954 Milwaukee Braves player contracts, each signed by the respective player, Braves General Manager John Quinn, and National League President Warren Giles (thirteen of the Giles signatures are stamped facsimiles). This is an extraordinary collection and the largest grouping of Major League player contracts for a specific team and year that we have ever offered. The lot consists of contracts for twenty-eight of the thirty-one roster players, plus contracts for an additional thirteen players who failed to make the Major League club that season. The only 1954 Braves contracts missing from the collection are those of Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Warren Spahn. (These three player contracts originally accompanied but were long ago sold separately.) Comprised of the following (roster players in bold): Joe Adcock, Bill Bruton, Bob Buhl, Lew Burdette, Paul Burris, Sam Calderone, Bill Casey, Gene Conley, Del Crandall, Ray Crone, Bill Denny, John Dittmer, Charles Gorin, Joey Jay, Ben Johnson, Ernie Johnson, Dave Jolly, Dave Koslo (signed “George Koslowski,” which was his legal name), Ted Laguna, Walter Linden, Johnny Logan, George Metkovich, Chester Morgan, Chester Nichols, Danny O’Connell, Andy Pafko, Phil Paine, Jim Pendleton, Billy Queen, Mel Roach, Richard Sinovic, Sibby Sisti, Roy Smalley (this is actually a Chicago Cubs contract that was later assigned to the Milwaukee Braves on March 29, 1954), Al Spangler, Glen Thompson, Bobby Thomson, Ben Thorpe, Tom Whisenant, Charles White, and Jim Wilson. Included with the contracts is the original file folder that is labeled "Contracts - Active - 1954." Signatures range in grade from “8” to “10,” with the majority grading “10.” All of the contracts (8.5 x 11 inches) display typical folds and are in overall Excellent to Mint condition. This is a very unusual and substantial collection of original Milwaukee Braves player contracts, representing the entire team (less just three players as noted) from the 1954 season. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 40 contracts. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,763
