1954 New York Giants World Champions Team-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058
Official National League (Giles) ball signed in blue ink by the following twenty-seven members of the 1954 World Champion New York Giants: Mays (signed "W. H. Mays"), Irvin, Wilhelm, Lockman, Williams, Dark, Thompson, Mueller, Katt, Rhodes, Hofman, Gardner, Taylor, Castleman, Amalfitano, Antonelli, Gomez (sweet spot), Maglie, Grissom, Liddle, Hearn, Jansen, McCall, Corwin, Worthington, Konikowski, and Giel. The signature example of Leo Durocher that appears on the sweet spot is a stamp (common for Durocher). Signatures range in grade from "8" to "10," averaging "9/10." All of the manufacturer's stampings are bold and legible, and the ball has been coated with a light layer of protective shellac. The Giants swept the heavily favored Cleveland Indians in the 1954 World Series to capture their first World Championship since 1933. Although Dusty Rhodes was the hitting star for the Giants, it was Willie Mays' miraculous catch of a ball off the bat of Vic Wertz in Game One that remains the defining moment of the Series. This is an outstanding New York Giants team ball representing the club's final World Championship in New York. Interestingly, this has been a prized family keepsake for decades, and our consignor decided to part with this ball (along with two others, which are also featured in this auction) only after learning of its true value from one of the appraisers at the Antiques Roadshow, held in Wichita, Kansas, in the summer of 2008. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,058
