Vintage 1950s Mickey Mantle Signed Photograph

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,175

Original 8 x 10-inch black-and-white photo of Mickey Mantle, signed by Mantle in blue ink (grading "8/9"). This photo dates to the 1950s, as does Mantle's signature (Mantle's early signature style is very distinctive and easily differentiated from that of his later years), and captures "The Mick" as an honored guest in a motorcade. Mantle is pictured as a passenger in the back seat, while a placard bearing his name, which is attached to the side of the car, clearly identifies him to the crowd. Although the photo is undated, the year listed on the one visible license plate reads "56." Mantle enjoyed his finest season to date in 1956. Not only did he win the coveted Triple Crown (leading the League in home runs, RBI, and batting average), but he also led the Yankees to their fifth World Championship of the decade. Vintage Mickey Mantle signatures dating from his playing career have always been held in much higher regard by collectors than the more common Mickey Mantle "blue Sharpie" signatures that proliferate in the hobby today. This is an exceptional Mickey Mantle signed photo, and a unique image capturing the great fanfare of 1956 and dating from the height of his illustrious career. The photo is in Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 21.25 x 18.25 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175
