Nellie Fox Postcard Collection with Eleven Signed Examples and Printing Plates (33)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293
This collection of thirty-one Nellie Fox photo postcards, produced by J. D. McCarthy, is highlighted by eleven signed examples plus the original printing plate blocks for two of the cards. Ideally, all of the signed cards have been encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with each signature certified as “Authentic.” Nellie Fox passed away in 1975 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997. Eight of the signed cards feature Fox with the White Sox (four different poses) and three depict him as a member of the Colt 45’s (two different poses). All have been signed in either blue or black ink, with six having been signed on the front and five on the reverse. Five cards include the salutation “Best Wishes” and one has been signed twice. All of the signatures are boldly penned and grade “9/10.” Six of the cards are Ex-Mt overall, four are Vg-Ex, and one is Gd-Vg. One has been mailed and another bears just a postage stamp on the reverse. Included in the collection are the original wood printing blocks used to make two of the J. D. McCarthy postcards of Fox. Each block features a metal ink plate affixed to the front and measures 3.5 x 5.75 x 1 inches. The first captures Fox in a kneeling-on-bat pose as a member of White Sox and includes the facsimile inscription “Best Wishes Nelson Fox” across his image. The name “Fox” is written on one of the end panels and the number “1000” appears on the reverse of the block. There are a few small areas of light corrosion on the ink plate that touch upon the central image; otherwise in Excellent condition overall. The second block depicts Fox in a kneeling-on-bat pose as a member of the Colt 45’s. The name “Fox” is written on one of the end panels and the notation “1000 with Nellie Bowling” appears on the reverse (the wording refers to “Nellie Fox Bowl, Inc.,” which was Fox’s bowling alley and the establishment for which these cards were produced as promotional pieces). In Excellent condition, with a few light surface scratches. It appears that these postcards were produced by Nellie Fox in quantities of one thousand to be used as souvenirs at his bowling alley, and for signing for fans. The remainder of the collection is comprised of twenty unsigned Nellie Fox postcards picturing him in five different poses (both as a member of the White Sox and Colt 45’s). Six of the cards have been mailed. The unsigned cards are Vg-Ex overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 33 items (11 signed cards, two printing blocks, and 20 unsigned cards). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,293
