1960 New York Yankees Team-Signed Ball with Mantle and Maris
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,410
Spalding “Official Home Run League” ball signed in blue ink by the following twenty-two members of the 1960 American League champion New York Yankees: Mantle (sweet spot, “7”), Berra (sweet spot), Maris (“5”), Ford, Howard, Duren, Long, Shantz, Boyer, Lopez, Cerv, Stafford, Kubek, Turley, Skowron, Ditmar, Terry, Grba, Maas, DeMaestri, Richardson, and Arroyo. In this golden era, many Yankee team balls were "ghost" signed for key stars, especially Mantle, by a clubhouse person. This ball is an extremely desirable example actually signed by all the stars including Mantle, with no secretarials. The majority of the signatures have slightly bled into the ball, but all are clearly legible and range in grade from “5” to “7.” The ball is in Near Mint condition, with bright, white panels and bold manufacturer’s stampings. 1960 was Maris’ first year with the Yankees and he certainly wasted no time getting accustomed to the short right field porch in Yankee Stadium. In a foreshadowing of things to come, Maris hit thirty-nine home runs (second only to Mantle’s forty) and led the League in RBI. Those gaudy numbers helped earn him his first of two consecutive MVP Awards. This is an outstanding mid-grade 1960s Yankee team ball that includes every key player on the roster of the fabled 1961 New York Yankees. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
