Circa 1964 Roger Maris Twice-Signed New York Yankees Questionnaire

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,175

This New York Yankees official player questionnaire has been signed twice, as required, by Roger Maris along the bottom. Both Maris signatures have been beautifully scripted in red ink and grade "9/10." The information gathered from these questionnaires was used not only for official team biographies of each player (yearbooks, programs, etc.) but also by radio and television announcers for color commentary. Maris has not answered all of the questions (some don't apply), but most bear either scripted or printed red-ink responses, all in Maris' hand (one is filled out in pencil, and parts of his name are filled out in black ink). Although the questionnaire is not dated, the fact that Maris did not list an age for his youngest son, Richard, and instead put the date of his birth ("11/15/63"), suggests that he filled this questionnaire out in the spring of 1964. Included among the information given here is that Maris prefers 35-inch, 33-ounce bats and that he lettered in Football, Basketball, and track in high school (Maris was a standout football player in high school and turned down an athletic scholarship from the University of Oklahoma, opting instead to sign with the Cleveland Indians). The most interesting answer Maris gives is to the question "Indicate Your Outstanding Baseball Experience?" He replies "None." A curious response given that Maris was a two-time MVP and had broken Babe Ruth's long-standing single-season home run record a few years earlier. The most amusing question, which was left blank, asks for his "winter occupation." (Although hard to believe today, given the current salaries in Major League Baseball, most professional athletes at that time often needed to supplement their income with off-season jobs.) This is a fascinating and unique Roger Maris twice-signed official Yankees document dating from just a few short years after the historic 1961 season. The questionnaire (8.5 x 14 inches) displays a few minor edge tears and light creases. Mounting remnants remain in each of the top two corners on the reverse. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,175
