1901-1917 M128 Police Gazette Supplements (74 Different)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,998
Collection of seventy-four different M128 Police Gazette supplements (out of only 112 subjects known to date), highlighted by sixteen Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. These large format black-and-white premiums were included with each issue of the weekly men's magazine between the years 1901 and 1917. The series included baseball players, boxers, other athletes, actresses and female models, with one premium accompanying each edition to provide extra value and to promote loyalty among readers. The baseball players were issued only during the baseball season. Each premium has the issue number and date along the top. Their method of issue, dimensions, and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage, often related to their display as intended (small tears, pin holes etc). The collection consists of the following: 1901: Davis. 1903: Dooin, Leach, McGraw (HOF), Seymour, McGinnity (HOF), and Cronin. 1904: Ames, Warner, Bowerman, and Bresnahan (HOF). 1905: Mertes and Hogg. 1906: Smith, Shea, and Chase. 1907: Davis, Powers, Moriarity, Dahlen, Ferguson, Strang, Chase/Armbuster, Brown (HOF), and Hoffman. 1909: Herzog, Lobert, Raymond, Covaleski, Meyers, Overall, Howard, and Morris. 1910: Warhop, Mullen, Ford, Bush, Magee, Dalton, Daniels, Cree, Devore, and Drucke. 1911: Mathewson (HOF), Wilson, and Wagner/Bresnahan (HOF). 1912: Wheat (HOF), Marquard (HOF), Irwin, Zimmerman, and Stahl. 1913: Chance (HOF), Wood, Daubert, Rucker, and Johnson (HOF). 1914: Cobb (HOF), Robertson, and Maisel. 1915: Maranville (HOF), Magee, and Collins (HOF). 1916: Doyle, Luderus, Rudolph, Crawford (HOF), Mitchell, Sisler (HOF), and Perritt. 1917: Bodie, Kauff, Lobert, Covaleskie, and Coombs. It would be a mistake to grade this issue in the same manner as traditional cards. The premiums (with few exceptions) technically are in overall approximately Good condition, because of the various flaws that come with the territory with this particular issue. M128 Police Gazette premiums are large, fragile, and easily damaged. For this issue, this is a very impressive looking group. It is also an unusually large group that represents a very substantial start toward the assembly of a complete set. This is an unusually rare premium issue that does not get a lot of attention from collectors due to a combination of its rarity and the premium's size, but has great merit both for the unusual images that are included (some of which appear in no other sets, others instantly recognizable) and as an outstanding collecting value. Dimensions: each approximately 11.25 x 16.25 inches. Total: 74 supplements. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,998
