1970 Who's Who in Baseball Signed by Over 400 Players including Clemente and Munson
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406
1970 edition of Who's Who in Baseball signed on the interior by 451 players, including 31 different Hall of Famers. Among the highlights are the signatures of Roberto Clemente, Nellie Fox, Catfish Hunter, Hank Aaron, Thurman Munson (his rookie season), Herman Hill (drowned at the age of twenty-five, Chico Ruiz (died in a car accident at the age of thirty-three), Jim McGlothlin (died of leukemia at the age of thirty-two), and Curt Flood. This book must have been a labor of love, especially when one considers the time and effort it must have taken to acquire all of the signatures contained within. The design of the book, which features small portrait photos and brief biographies of all of the Major League players for the year, is an especially appealing format for autograph collectors, but we have never before seen such a comprehensive signed example. Even if one excluded all of the deceased players whose signatures appear here, it would probably take years, not to mention tens of thousands of dollars (taking into consideration signing fees and travel costs) to replicate this book today. Nearly all of the players have signed the book next to their respective entry. (The signatures of a number of managers, coaches, and former players appear on either the title page, or the last page in the book.) The vast majority of signatures have been scripted in either blue or black ink, and grade "9/10" on average. Hall of Fame Players: Aaron, Aparicio, Banks, Brock (faded, grading "5"), Carew, Carlton, Cepeda, Clemente, Fingers, Fox, B. Gibson, Hunter, R. Jackson, Jenkins, Kaline, Killebrew, Marichal, Mazeroski, McCovey, Morgan, Niekro, Palmer, Perez, Perry, Roberts, B. Robinson, F. Robinson, Stargell, Weaver, B. Williams, and Yastrzemski. Notable Players: Tommie Aaron, Sandy Alomar, Felipe Alou, Matty Alou, Stan Bahnsen, Sal Bando, Mark Belanger, Paul Blair, Steve Blass, Curt Belfary, Bobby Bonds, Ken Brett, Nellie Briles, Gates Brown, Don Buford, Bert Campaneris, Jose Cardenal, Clay Carroll, Norm Cash, Dean Chance, Tony Conigliaro, Mike Cuellar, Vic Davalillo, Pat Dobson, Al Downing, Moe Drabowsky, Doc Ellis, Ron Fairly, Curt Flood, Ray Fosse, Bill Freehan, Jim Fregosi, Tito Fuentes, Oscar Gamble, Jim Grant, Elrod Hendricks, Herman Hill, Willie Horton, Frank Howard, Walt Hriniak, Julian Javier, Davey Johnson, Jay Johnstone, Jim Kaat, Ewing Kauffman (owner of the Kansas City Royals), Mike Kekich, Don Kessinger, Jerry Kooseman, Ed Kranepool, Mickey Lolich, Jim Lonborg, Sparky Lyle, Jim Maloney, Carlos May, Rudy May, John Mayberry, Dick McAuliffe, Mike McCormick, Lindy McDaniel, Sam McDowell, Jim McGlothlin, Denny McLain, Dave McNally, Hal McRae, Bill Melton, Andy Messersmith, Felix Millan, Rick Monday, Manny Mota, Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer, Graig Nettles, Joe Niekro, Gary Nolan, Jim Northup, John Odom, Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Claude Osteen, Amos Otis, Jose Pagan, Camilo Pascual, Jim Perry, Rico Petrocelli, Lou Piniella, Vada Pinson, Aurielo Rodriguez, Jim Rooker, Pete Rose, Johnny Roseboro, Chico Ruiz, Manny Sanguillen, Dick Schoefield, George Scott, Mike Shannon, Ted Sizemore, Mayo Smith, Reggie Smith, Russ Snyder, Jim Spencer, Mikey Stanley, Rusty Staub, Ron Swoboda, Joe Torre, Cesar Tovar, Del Unser, Roy White, Walt Williams, Maury Wills, and Rick Wise. The soft-cover book (5.25 x 8.5 inches) displays moderate handling wear (as one would expect from a book that has been handled and signed by so many players), but the pages remain clean and free of any major flaws. The cover is present but detached from the spine, with creases and tape repair. In Good to Very Good condition overall (primarily due to the condition of the covers; the interior pages are overall Excellent). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
