Thurman Munson Signed 1971 New York Yankees Spring Training Program
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $705
Offered here are the front and back covers to a 1971 New York Yankees spring training program which have been signed in red ink by various members of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins, including Thurman Munson. Munson's signature (grading "9") appears on the back cover with that of Ron Bloomberg, David Pagan, and three others (illegible). The front cover has been signed by Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Steve Braun, and three others (illegible). Signatures average "9" in grade. New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson was the toast of spring training in 1971, having previously enjoyed a remarkable freshman campaign in which he hit .302 and won the 1970 Rookie of the Year Award. Although he slumped somewhat in 1971, he soon became one of the top catchers in baseball and led the Yankees to three pennants and two consecutive World Championships during the late 1970s. Unfortunately, he died tragically in an airplane crash in 1979 at the age of thirty-two, thus resulting in the rarity of his signature today. This is an extremely early Munson signature dating from only his second full season in the Majors. Only the detached covers of the program are offered here. The interior pages have been removed. Each cover (approximately 6 x 9 inches) displays border tears, fold lines, moderate creases, and paper residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. (Despite the flaws, none of the signatures has been adversely affected.) In Good to Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $705
