Quality Signed 3 x 5 Collection with Chick Gandil and Many Hall of Famers (17)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350
Addendum: Please Note - the Dizzy Dean signed card pictured in the catalog is not part of this lot. The Dean signature on that card is secretarial and it was included in the catalog photo by mistake. It was never listed in the lot description.
Collection of fifteen individually signed 3 x 5-inch cards, representing thirteen different players (including eight Hall of Famers and two "Black Sox" players), all of whom are long since deceased. Also included in this grouping is an additional Hall of Famer signed item: a handwritten note by Hank Greenberg scripted upon a standard-sized postcard. Unless otherwise noted, all of the signatures are penned in blue ink and grade "10." The signatures on the 3 x 5-inch cards are those of Earl Averill (red ink), Frank Baker, Jack Barry (black ink), Fred Clarke (black ink), "Shano" Collins (black ink), Chick Gandil, Lefty Gomez, Stan Hack, Gabby Hartnett, Rube Marquard (black marker), Carl Mays, Casey Stengel (3 examples), and Bill Terry. Both Barry and Collins have added a salutation and/or additional information regarding their respective careers. The cards are in overall Excellent condition with the exception of Barry (Vg, with tape residue on each corner from having once been mounted). The Hank Greenberg handwritten postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches), addressed to "Dr. William L. Gehring," is dated 1/28/80 and reads in full: "Bill - Many thanks for your offer of assistance, when and if I write a book. My best to you. Cordially - Hank Greenberg." Both the text and signature, scripted in black fine-point marker, grade "10." Vg-Ex, with light creasing in the upper right corner. This is a small but high-quality group with several particularly notable highlights (especially Baker and Gandil). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 16 items (16 3 x 5-inch cards and 1 postcard). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,350
