1888 Cincinnati Baseball "Accordion Style" Scorecard Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,880
Collection of three 1888 Cincinnati American Association programs, each featuring an illustrated portrait of a player on the cover. Programs from this series are among the most highly prized of all baseball scorecard designs. Each of the eight-sided fold-over scorecards opens up "accordion style" to reveal four panels. The two interior center panels each feature the preprinted lineup for a team, while the other panels display advertising. All were published by Fennessy & Renau. 1) Scorecard for a game against Baltimore picturing Cincinnati star first baseman John Reilly. Reilly was one of the League's top hitters in 1888, leading the American Association in slugging percentage (.501), home runs (13), RBI (103), and total bases (264). The preprinted lineups include Reilly and McPhee for Cincinnati, and Burns and Tucker for Baltimore. The program is not scored and is in Excellent condition. 2) Scorecard for an exhibition game against Detroit of the National League. The cover features a portrait of William Hart. The preprinted lineups include Reilly, McPhee, and Mullane for Cincinnati, and Brouthers, Thompson, and Hanlon for Detroit. Neatly scored in pencil. A name, written in blue ink, appears on a rear panel. In Very Good to Excellent condition. 3) Scorecard for a game between the "Shamrocks" and the "Deppens." The cover displays an illustration of Cincinnati outfielder Hugh Nicol. The preprinted lineups for both clubs are listed, but the card is not scored. The "Shamrocks" and "Deppens" were probably local amateur clubs, indicating that local clubs could also order programs with lineups preprinted for their games. One light diagonal abrasion on the portrait on the cover, otherwise in Excellent condition. Each scorecard measures 3.75 x 6.5 inches folded, and 15 x 6.5 inches unfolded. Total: 3 scorecards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,880
