1907 Buffalo Bisons Team-Composite Display Photograph
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,058
Extremely rare and substantial team-composite display photograph picturing seventeen members of the 1907 Buffalo Bisons, a member of the Eastern League. Each player is pictured in uniform and identified in print (last name only) below his respective image. The name of the team and year are prominently displayed in white lettering. The photographer's credit, "H. C. Weasner Photo'gr Buffalo, N.Y.," appears along the base. Although we cannot state with certainty, we believe the player identified in the upper right corner as "Groh" to be Heinie Groh, who later went on to star in the Majors with both the Giants and Reds. Not only is the resemblance remarkable, but Groh, who would have been eighteen years old in 1907, was from Rochester, New York, and its likely that he would have begun his professional career close to home. This Eastern League photographic display piece is one of two examples that we have seen dating from 1907 (the other pictured Baltimore), both of which were produced by the H. C. Weasner photography studio. The extraordinary photographic quality of these pieces, coupled with their exceptional composition and extreme rarity, suggest that they were most likely meant for special presentation to team members only. The composite photo, which offers outstanding clarity and contrast, is in Excellent to Mint condition and remains affixed upon its original cardboard mount. The piece is housed in its original wood frame, which measures 19.5 x 24 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $1,058
