1935 Quaker Oats Babe Ruth Scorers - Yankees and Braves

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $823

Presented is a high-grade set of both varieties ("B" and "NY" on cap) of the 1935 Quaker Oats Babe Ruth scorer. During the mid-1930s, Babe Ruth was the principal spokesperson for Quaker Oats’ Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice cereals and he appeared in nearly all of the company’s printed advertisements. The "lure" of that advertising campaign was the offer of prizes that could only be obtained through the redemption of box tops of Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereal. Naturally, nearly all of the prizes related to Babe Ruth in some way. Offered here are both variations (one far rarer than the other) of one of the most attractive prizes issued at the time: a Babe Ruth scorer. Each scorer pictures Ruth on the front and features five dials on the reverse to record, respectively, the runs for both the home team and visitors, strike, balls, and outs. The scorers are identical in every way except for the fact that on one Ruth is pictured wearing a New York Yankees cap and on the other a Boston Braves cap. Ruth was released from the Yankees after the 1934 season and joined Boston the following year. Since Ruth left the Yankees right at the beginning of the advertising campaign, Quaker Oats was quick to change the insignia (on the cap) on the scorer to reflect his new team. The Yankees variety is by far the rarer of the two styles (by a factor of greater than twenty to one). This is a beautiful high-grade matched set. Each is in Near Mint condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $823
