1958-1963 Complete Hartland Baseball Statue Collection - With Five Original Boxes and Six Tags!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Complete set of all eighteen Hartland Major League baseball players, plus the Little Leaguer and the "Minor Leaguer." In addition, the set is accompanied by five original Hartland boxes and six original Hartland tags. This quality set was saved by Bill Dutch, one of the all-time advanced collectors from the earliest days of the organized hobby. Over twenty-five years ago, when he sold his collection (which included everything from a T206 Wagner to a 1933 Goudey sheet with Lajoie to sets of 1952 Topps, Cracker Jacks, and really just about everything imaginable), the one item that he most regretted parting with was his Hartland set, as this was a special collection he remembered so fondly from his youth, and it could be beautifully displayed. He soon acquired this extraordinary set from Herb Pearo, another early hobby giant, and has kept it very carefully stored and beautifully displayed ever since. The Hartland Company's series of baseball statues, issued from 1958 to 1963, have long been recognized as the most sought after sports personality figures ever made. They are so well crafted that the fans of each player can easily recognize their favorite by their stance or pose alone. Each statue was originally designed to retail for $1.98 to $2.50. In 1958 dollars that equates to about $20.00 to $25.00 today, so it understandable that most purchases of Hartlands were for special occasions, and most kids had no more than a few of them. This complete set of eighteen different statues is accompanied by the Little Leaguer (Nr/Mt) and the small batter (4.75 inches in height), sometimes referred to as the "Minor Leaguer." The "Minor Leaguer" is actually a dashboard ornament for a car and comes complete with its original cardboard backing. While the assemblage of a complete set of Hartlands is an attainable goal for most collectors, the acquisition of the original retail boxes and tags is not. The boxes themselves are particularly rare and are normally found only in the most advanced collections. This outstanding collection includes five original boxes and six original tags. The boxes offered here are those for Yogi Berra (an interior flap is detached, but present; otherwise Vg-Ex), Nellie Fox (small tear along the front panel; otherwise Ex), Stan Musial (Gd, with a number of moderate tears), Luis Aparicio (the top lid is detached, but present, and there are a number of small tears, Gd), and Ernie Banks (Vg-Ex, with a number of creases). The included tags are those for Luis Aparicio (Nr-Mt), Stan Musial (Nr-Mt), Willie Mays (Ex-Mt), Ernie Banks (Vg), Warren Spahn (Vg-Ex), and Yogi Berra (Ex). Each of the twenty statues displays only very modest flaws and is in minimally Excellent condition. All of the batting figures are complete with original bats (with the exception only of Roger Maris, which has a perfect replacement bat). The set, which displays exceptionally well, is comprised of Eddie Mathews, Dick Groat, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Rocky Colavito, Duke Snider, Don Drysdale, Harmon Killebrew, Warren Spahn, Stan Musial, Nellie Fox, Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Luis Aparicio, Roger Maris, Ernie Banks, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra (with mask), Little Leaguer, and "Minor Leaguer." Also included are two vintage Hartland statue brochures (ink notations in one; otherwise both are Ex), a 1988 Hartland easel-back cardboard advertising display (Nr-Mt; 10 x 13.5 inches; promoting the company's release of its "25th Anniversary Commemorative Statues"), and a few additional modern brochures and order forms. This is a far above average set in Excellent condition, and the addition of five boxes and six tags makes collection of this classic issue all the more desirable and comprehensive. Total: 20 statues, five boxes, and six tags. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,113
