Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Original Painting by Palmer Murphy

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,350

Extraordinary original oil on wood painting of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig by renowned artist Palmer Murphy. Ruth and Gehrig are pictured in a familiar pose, each holding a bat, with the old Yankee Stadium serving as an appropriate backdrop. This piece has been consigned directly from the artist and is therefore new to the hobby. According to Murphy, it took him over a month to produce this piece, which is not surprising given its rich composition. The attention to detail, not to mention the use of color and light, are extraordinary and we cannot recall having seen a finer rendition of baseball’s greatest slugging duo. Robert Edward Auctions has had the privilege of handling many original baseball artworks over the past thirty years, but few have received the same amount of attention as this work. It has been adorning a wall in our office for over five months and nearly everyone who sees it has been effusive in his or her admiration for it. Although best known for his bronze statues, Murphy, as evidenced by this work, is also an accomplished painter and has been retained to portray historical and corporate figures in oil for private collectors here and abroad. His works have also been displayed in numerous institutions, including both the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore. Framed to total dimensions of 21 x 27 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,350
