1906 Ullman's "Art Frame" Series Postcard of Christy Mathewson
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233
Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Ullman's "Art Frame" Series postcard of Christy Mathewson, one of Matty's rarest cards and the key to the set from this distinctive issue. This set of postcards is noteworthy both for its exciting design and great rarity. Even a sample card from this set is almost impossible to find. Produced to commemorate the Giants’ 1905 Championship season, the set features exclusively Giants. The fronts feature black-and-white images surrounded by a wood-grain designed border. This beauty has been harshly graded POOR 10 by SGC due to a small tear on the lower left edge (no paper loss, with the appearance of a crease) which has been reinforced with tape on the reverse. Some light creases in the borders, none of which affect the image area. The postcard reverse is addressed and mailed as intended. Without reference to the tiny tear, we grade this card Very Good condition. This is one of the most striking and visually exciting of all Christy Mathewson cards. It is also one of the rarest of all Christy Mathewson cards, with probably fewer than ten examples known. This is the second time we have handled this 1906 Ullman Mathewson and, interestingly enough, we have never handled another! When we first offered this card in our May 2007 auction (Lot 137), the final sale price was $2,350. Miraculously, this card was originally discovered at that time among a large group of comic baseball postcards that was sent to us for review. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,233
