1956 Bucky Harris Detroit Tigers Game-Used Road Uniform (Jersey, Pants, and Cap)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819
1956 Detroit Tigers road uniform (jersey, pants, and cap) worn by Hall of Fame manager Bucky Harris during his final season in the Major Leagues. Bucky Harris jerseys are extremely rare. This is the first we have ever seen, let alone with matching pants and cap. JERSEY: Graded A9.5 by MEARS. The gray flannel road jersey is lettered "Detroit" across the front and features the number "32" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquèd in black on orange tackle twill. A "Rawlings Hall of Fame Flannel" label and adjacent "44" size tag appear on the left front tail, as does the name "Harris" chain-stitched in navy. Located on the interior left front tail are a laundry tag and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1956." A swatch of cloth, measuring approximately 1.5 x 1.75 inches, has been removed from the jersey on the interior left front tail, directly to the right of the flag tag. Aside from the removal of the swatch, the jersey is original and unaltered, displaying moderate wear. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (10 point base grade, with a half point deducted for the removed swatch of cloth). This is an extremely rare Hall of Fame jersey. Currently, it is the only Bucky Harris jersey listed in the MEARS census, and as such, it represents the highest-graded example. PANTS: The matching gray pants feature a "Rawlings Hall of Fame Flannel" label, an adjacent "38" size tag, and a laundry tag in the waistband. Directly to the right of the "38" size tag is another size tag reading "Size 37." Also located in the waistband, directly below the manufacturer's label, is the name "Harris" chain-stitched in navy upon a white strip tag and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1956." Original and unaltered, the pants display moderate wear. MEARS does not assign grades to pants. HAT: The navy blue cap features an embroidered orange "D" on the front and an orange button on the top. A "McAuliffe" label appears in the leather headband. Stamped in the headband are the size ("6 7/8") and a depiction of a baseball bearing the words "KM Pro Cap." Harris' uniform number ("32") is written in vintage black marker on the underside of the brim. Moderate wear is displayed throughout including soiling to both the underside of the brim and headband. MEARS does not assign grades to hats. In 1924, Stanley ‘Bucky’ Harris was the toast of the baseball world, leading the Washington Senators to their first and only World Series championship as player-manager at the tender age of 27. Harris would go on to manage a total of 29 years in the Major Leagues, mostly with Washington (on three separate occasions), and in 1947 he won his second and final World Championship with the New York Yankees. Harris managed the Tigers twice. His first term ran from 1929 to 1933, while his second encompassed the years 1955 and 1956. After retiring from managing following the 1956 season, Harris served as general manager of the Boston Red Sox and later scouted for the White Sox. In 1963 he accepted a position as special assignment scout with the expansion Washington Senators, thus ending his baseball career in the same city in which it began. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975. This is an exceptional and rare uniform ensemble worn by one of the greatest field tacticians in baseball history during his final season as manager. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,819
