1957 Ned Garver Kansas City Athletics Signed Game-Used Jersey

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,763

Kansas City Athletics home jersey worn by journeyman pitcher Ned Garver in 1957. Graded A9.5 by MEARS. The white flannel jersey is lettered “Athletics” across the front and features the number “31” on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on blue felt. The A’s team-logo patch appears on the left sleeve. A “Wilson 42” label is located on the left front tail. Garver’s name, the set number, the year, and the uniform number (“Garver 2-57-31”) are chain-stitched in blue upon a white strip tag that is positioned onto the bottom of the exterior button panel. Garver has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie (grading “9/10”) in the collar. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays heavy wear including a small tear in the right sleeve and a few small, scattered, light stains. Accompanying the jersey is a vintage, blue-sleeved baseball undershirt, manufactured by Tim McAuliffe, that bears the name “Garver” written in black laundry pen on the back of the collar. Ned Garver’s fourteen-year career record of 129-157 belies his overall talents on the mound, as he spent nearly his entire career with second-division clubs. A greater testament to his abilities would be his 3.75 lifetime ERA and the fact that in 1951 he won twenty games with a St. Louis Browns club that finished in last place with a record of 52-102! 1957 marked Garver’s first season with Kansas City, where he appeared in twenty-four games and finished the year with a record of 6-13 and a 3.84 ERA. This particular uniform style was only worn by Kansas City for the six-year period 1955 through 1960. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with a half point deducted for the small tear in the right sleeve and the few tiny stains). This is one of only six 1950s Kansas City A’s jerseys listed in the MEARS census, with none graded at this level and only one graded higher. This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticator Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,763
