1934-1945 Kiki Cuyler Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $823

Hazen "KiKi" Cuyler H&B signature model bat (predating model numbers) from the 1934-1945 labeling period. Graded A7.5 by MEARS; only one graded at this level, with four graded higher. The bat displays heavy use including, ball marks, cleat marks, and deadwood on the back of the barrel. Four vintage nails have been applied to the back of the barrel in order to mitigate the effects of the deadwood. If anyone had any doubts about Cuyler's hitting ability, they were quickly erased during his 1924 rookie season with the Pirates. Cuyler finished the year with a .354 batting average, which was not only the top mark on the team, but third best in the National League. The following season he batted .357, thus clearly establishing himself as one of the game's top hitters. Cuyler batted over .300 in seven of his first eight seasons, including a career high .360 in 1929, and finished his eighteen-year career with a .321 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1968. Cuyler retired from the Major Leagues in 1938, but he continued playing ball as player/manager with Chattanooga in the Southern League in 1939 and 1940. He then returned to the Majors as a coach with Chicago from 1941 through 1943. This bat measures 35.75 inches and weighs 32.8 ounces. H&B factory records indicate that Cuyler ordered 36-inch, 34-ounce bats (consistent with this bat's specifications) during the periods 1934-1941, 1944 and 1945. The design of the center brand and "Powerized" logo are consistent with the manufacturing process dating from the mid 1940s, suggesting that this bat likely dates from Cuyler's coaching days. Graded A7.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade plus 3 points for use and a half point deducted for the deadwood on the reverse). This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticator Troy Kinunen. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $823
