1908 PC760 T. R. Rose "Greenfield's Delatour Chocolates" Advertising Postcard
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,293
Presented is an extraordinary advertising postcard sample: a rare PC760 T. R. Rose Postcard with advertising overprint on the reverse for Greenfield's Delatour Chocolates, manufactured by E. Greenfield's Sons on Fifth Avenue, New York. "Overprinting" is a term commonly used to refer to the rare practice of a company taking cards already printed and adding advertising, in the form of printing or ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as an advertising vehicle at a relatively modest cost compared to creating and printing a new set. In this case, the overprint on this PC760 T. R. Rose Postcard of Turner from Cleveland is beautifully and very elaborately printed, and advertises "Greenfield’s Delatour Chocolates. Standard of Excellence. One hundred different kinds of plain, old-fashioned and novel centres. For Sale Everywhere, By the piece or by the pound, E. Greenfield’s Sons, Established 1848, Fifth Ave. Bldg. New York." The T. R. Rose Postcard Company obviously offered this style of elaborate advertising overprinting as a special service to advertisers. We have seen a few other Rose Postcard advertising overprint examples over the years. All are extremely rare. The advertising overprint is boldly printed in brown ink. Rose postcards are rare enough. A Greenfield's Chocolates advertising Rose Postcard is a virtually impossible-to-find sample. The card has even wear on the corners, light edge wear, and a few minor creases. The reverse is addressed and mailed as intended. Postmarked April 30, 1912. Very Good condition. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,293
