Muhammad Ali Limited-Edition LeRoy Neiman Serigraph
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994
Titled Homage to Ali, issued in 1991, serigraph numbered "141/270," signed in pencil by Neiman ("9") in the lower margin. Edition limited to 325 total impressions (270 numbered impressions, 50 artist's proofs, and 5 printer's proofs). This classic and extremely substantial Neiman tribute to Muhammad Ali captures key moments of the epic "Rumble in the Jungle" battle between Ali and Foreman. Ali once again "shocked the world" on October 29, 1974, when he knocked out the heavily favored Foreman in round 8 to recapture the Heavyweight Championship of the world. This is one of only three Muhammad Ali serigraphs created by Neiman and, in the eyes of many, the finest. Ali is pictured five times in the montage, highlighted by the large central image of him delivering the knockout blow to Foreman's jaw. Ali was one of Neiman's favorite subjects and this piece is one of the most evocative boxing works ever produced by the legendary artist. This is a rarely seen Neiman. We have offered only one example in the past. It appeared as Lot 727 in REA's May 2004 sale and sold for $3,450. The serigraph measures 38 x 28 inches (image area) and displays tape remnants on the reverse from having once been mounted and framed. In Near Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,994
