Circa 1910 T218 Mecca "Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters" Complete SGC-Graded Set (153)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,350
Complete set of 153 cards featuring early twentieth-century "Athletes and Prize Fighters" issued with Hassan and Mecca tobacco products. The entire set of 153 cards has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. Collectors are well aware of the many baseball sets of the 1910 era, but several very substantial high-quality sets featuring other athletes were also issued by tobacco companies. The largest and most substantial of these sets is the T218 Mecca "Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters" set. The T218 series features sixty-six boxers and eighty-seven other champion athletes of the era, including bowlers, billiards champions, and track-and-field stars. This is the only complete set of T218s listed on the SGC Set Registry with an average grade of 45.12 (which is an extremely respectable grade for this 1910 issue). The grades for the entire set can be easily accessed online on the SGC Set Registry under "Jay's Qualitycards T218 Champions." This set has been assembled over a period of years by an extremely dedicated collector with a special interest in this set. This is an exceptional set with almost all cards having an appearance far superior to their technically accurate SGC assigned grades. The SGC grades are as follows: One NM 84: Ruddy. Four EX/NM 80: Gissing, Irons, O'Keefe, and Welsh. Three EX+ 70: Kaufman, Lewis, and West. Twenty-three EX 60: Burke, Cloughen, Collins, Coulon, Daniels (head shot), Deschler, Ewry, Flanagan (waist), Gilles, Glarner, Haywood, Hillman, Holmer, Jensen, Johns (framed), Klaus, Low, Mellody, Battling Nelson, D. Nelson, Riddell, Russell, and Sedley. Fifty-five VG/EX 50: including Baldwin, Conley, Corbett, both Jeffries (front and side views), Cutler (action shot), Cutler (port.), Demarest, Gardiner, Goodman, Griffin, Hamilton, Herreshoff, Hurley, Hyland, Keogh, Ketchell, Keyes, Kline, Marto, Moran, Nicholls, Nitchie, O'Brien, Stone, J. Sullivan, J. Walsh, and Wolgast. Thirty-three VG 40: including Brannigan, Brown, Cross, Delmont, De Oro, Dunbar, Gans, Gardner, Heins, Hoppe (playing billiards), Hoppe (port.), Hoxsey, both Jack Johnson (front and side views), Langford, Loughrey, Morningstar (action shot), Murphy, Smith, Stewart, M. Sullivan, Summers (seated), Summers (standing), and E. Weston. Twenty GOOD 30: Attell, Crowley, Donahoe, Douglass, Driscoll, A. Goodman, Jeanette, Johnstone, Morningstar (port.), Neil, Obermeyer, O'Toole, Riley, Sheridan, J. Sullivan, Sutton (action shot), Sutton (port.), Truenbach, E. Walsh, and C. Weston. Ten FAIR 20: Cline, Daly, Eyton, Lee, W. Lewis, McFarland, McGovern, Meadows, Northridge, and Papke. Four POOR 10: Hobens, Hueston, Porter, and Rector. The consignor has invested years in assembling and upgrading this set. Compared to baseball cards of the era, the T218 set (which is at least as scarce) represents a particularly outstanding value. This is an extremely attractive complete set of one of the most classic tobacco sport issues from the early twentieth century. Also included with the set is an original opened Mecca box in which the cards were issued (Ex). Total 153 cards plus one box. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $2,350
