Rocky Marciano Signed Handwritten Letter
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $294
Two-page handwritten letter (on two sides of a single sheet of onionskin paper) signed simply "Rocky" by Rocky Marciano, former heavyweight boxing champion. In this undated letter, Marciano writes to a woman named Marilyn regarding a real estate deal. In full: Dear Marilyn - I finally found the letter I was talking about the other day. It seems these people heard I was interested sometime ago and wondered if I could be again. I had a specific reason before but now its just a piece of property. Could you in your spare time find out something about it now there is no reason for it but if the price is right I could buy on speculation. I should be up that way by the 21 of Sept will call to see if I could meet with your atty friend. Best Wishes - Rocky - did you like the Koscot idea. I may follow up on that will let you know details next time I see ya - Send Mail to me a this address - "Bob Hood" - Robin Hood + ASS 124 Southeast 2nd St. Fort Lauderdale, Fla - Post office box (596). The majority of the letter is written in black ink, but it is obvious that Marciano's pen was running out of ink, so, beginning with the salutation "Best Wishes" he switched over to a new blue pen. Fortunately, that change of writing instrument has resulted in Marciano's signature grading "10," whereas the primary text of the letter grades "7" overall. Marciano also went back over a few of his earlier words in blue ink. Rocky Marciano is the only heavyweight-boxing champion in history to retire undefeated. Unfortunately, his untimely death in 1969, one day before his forty-sixth birthday, has resulted in the great rarity of his signature examples, and especially handwritten letters, today. The letter (8.5 x 11 inches) has horizontal and vertical fold lines, scattered dark staining, and a few small holes (none of which adversely affect the signature). In Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $294
