1935 R331 National Chicle Football SGC-Graded Complete Set (36)
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $8,813
Extremely attractive mostly high-grade complete set of 1935 R331 National Chicle Football cards, highlighted by Bronko Nagurski and Knute Rockne. Thirty cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA), and the remaining six we chose not to grade because of low condition. Six cards range in grade from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, seven are Ex, three are Vg-Ex, seven are Vg, four are Gd, one is Fair, and two are Authentic. The SGC grades are as follows: Three NM 84: #2, 12, and 23 Feathers. Three EX/NM 80: #7 Strong RC (HOF), 10 Battles RC (HOF), and 11 Edwards RC (HOF). Four EX+ 70: #4, 6, 8, and 17. Three EX 60: #5, 24 Hinkle RC (HOF), and 27 (high #). Three VG/EX 50: #9 Rockne (HOF, crisp and clean, a hint of light wear on the square corners, no creases, downgraded due to 25/75 L/R centering, otherwise EX; great-looking card), 13, and 33 (high #). Seven VG 40: #15, 18, 28 (high #), 29 (high #), 31 (high #), 34 Nagurski RC (HOF, well centered with evenly rounded corners, no major creases, a few pin-point surface abrasions, and with stains on the bottom border and the reverse; we grade this card Good), and 36 Masterson (last card in set). Four GOOD 30: #14, 20, 30 (high #), and 32 (high #). One FAIR 20: #26 (high #). Two Authentic: #1 Clark RC (HOF) and 19. (Neither of these cards could receive a numerical grade because each has a slight trim along the top border; they otherwise each have an Ex-Mt appearance). The six ungraded cards are as follows: #3 (Gd-Vg), 16 (Gd), 21 (Pr), 22 (Pr), 25 (high #, Pr), and 35 (high #, Pr). This is a very attractive mostly high-grade set of the most popular 1930s football issue, with many cards appearing far better than suggested by their very respectable, technically accurate grades. The equivalent total SMR for the assigned grades (not including the two authentic and the six ungraded cards) is $7,025. Total 36 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $8,813
