1935 R311-2 National Chicle Football Glossy Premiums Near-Complete Set (14/17)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $3,819

Complete set minus three of this very scarce 1930s premium football set issued by National Chicle Gum, missing only Kostka, Maniaci, and "Pittsburgh vs. Navy" for completion. Each glossy premium measures 6 x 8 inches, and the set features both professional and collegiate players. These large premiums have often been overlooked by collectors. The R311-2 football premiums are much rarer than their baseball counterparts. This issue cannot be easily assembled in set form; all of the premiums in the set are rare, so much so that when seen, they are noticeably striking and unusual even to advanced collectors. This set (minus three) was assembled by a very dedicated collector many years ago. This is an exceptionally clean and high-grade collection for R311-2s, which crease very easily due to the thin stock on which they are printed. The grades of this set break down as follows: Three Ex, three Vg-Ex, and eight Vg. Almost all graded less than Ex have been downgraded due to small, insignificant creases, and otherwise have an Ex or better overall appearance. The entire set is essentially comprised of highlights, including: Red Grange (Vg-Ex), 1934 Chicago Bears Western Champs (Vg), 1934 New York Giants World's Champs (Vg), and Notre Dame's Quick Kick (Ex). This is the first (near) complete set of R311-2 football premiums that we can recall offering in many years. Total 14 R311-2s, representing a complete set minus three of this elusive 1930s premium football issue. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $3,819
