1950 Topps Football Felt Backs Joe Paterno Rookie
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,645
Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Very attractive rookie card of Joe Paterno, the key card from the first major football card series ever issued by Topps: 1950 Felt Backs. These unusual cards, honoring college football stars, were issued a year prior to Topps’ 1951 Connie Mack's All Stars and Current All Stars, as well as the 1951 Topps Red and Blue Back baseball sets. The cards measure 7/8 x 1-7/16 inches with a portrait image set against a colored background (blue, red, green, brown, or yellow), and with the back of each card featuring a felt pennant representing the player’s school. This card is centered to the right (approximately 80/20 L/R), with a bold blue background, minor edge and corner wear (a little more wear on the lower left), and a light surface crease in from the left edge. An attractive Vg-Ex example of the key card from this very significant and scarce early Topps issue, which has always been somewhat overlooked by collectors, perhaps because of its unusual dimensions. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,645
