1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Rarity: Mitchell, Cincinnati
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. One of only four examples graded at this level with just two graded higher. One of the legendary rarities of candy cards, from the E90-1 American Caramel series, Mitchell, Cincinnati, has long been recognized as one of the key rarities of the E90-1 American Caramel candy card series, and in the early days of organized collecting was often referred to by collectors as the "Honus Wagner of E cards." Bright and clean, both front and back, with a brilliant yellow background, no caramel stains, just a hint of even wear (predominately lower right) to the square corners, and centered slightly to the right. A few tiny pinpoint spots of surface abrasion on the reverse suggest this card may have long ago been removed from a scrapbook and is mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. This is a very strong example of this legendary key rarity from the most popular caramel-card set of the era. This card (and E90-1s in general) is rarely found in high grade. Today collectors recognize many cards as being of various degrees of rarity in the E90-1 set, but Mitchell, Cincinnati (along with the Joe Jackson rookie card, also from the same set) will always be the most famous key rarity of the classic E90-1 American Caramel set. SMR value is $3,000. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,113
