Roger Staubach 1971 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl VI Salesman's Sample Ring

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,645

This Dallas Cowboys salesman's sample Super Bowl ring, produced in commemoration of the team's 1971 World Championship season, is identical in design to the one issued to the team's Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach but is produced from different materials. The front of the sterling silver ring, manufactured by Balfour, features a faux diamond set upon a blue stone designed in the shape of a star. Fifteen faux diamonds surround the star. The ring's bezel reads "Dallas Cowboys - World Champions." The right shank features a depiction of the team's helmet, the name "Staubach," and his uniform number, "12." The left shank displays the year "1971," the words "Super Bowl VI," a depiction of the Lombardi Trophy, and the NFL logo. "Balfour - Sterling" is engraved on the interior band. Super Bowl VI, held on January 16, 1972, in New Orleans, marked the first of a record five World Championships for "America's Team." The Cowboys completely dominated the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI, winning the game by a score of 24-3. Staubach was the star of the game for Dallas, completing 12 out of 19 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for eighteen yards and was later named the game's Most Valuable Player. This ring and the 1977 Staubach sample ring that is offered as a separate lot are produced in silver. This is very unusual and these are the only rings of this type that we have seen or heard of that were made of silver. Sample rings are typically made of Ultrium or celestrium, suggesting the possibility that these are prototypes, unusual samples, or were specially produced at great expense for some other purpose. Salesman's sample rings are rare because they are seriously expensive sales tools which, understandably, are not given away as promotional gifts. They are very popular with collectors when available, and represent a relatively affordable alternative to the virtually identical rings owned by the players, which would be many times more expensive if available. Size: approximately 12. Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,645
