1961-1969 Geese Ausbie Harlem Globetrotters Home Jersey

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,528

Harlem Globetrotters home jersey, dating to the 1960s, worn by Hubert "Geese" Ausbie, the "Clown Prince of Basketball." Graded A9 by MEARS. The blue dureen jersey is lettered "Original Harlem Globetrotters" on the front and features the number "35" on the reverse. Six "Stars" appear on the front and back, respectively, and a gold "globe" patch appears on the reverse above the number. The word "Harlem" and all of the "Stars" are appliquéd in red on white tackle twill. All other letters are appliquéd in gold tackle twill. A "Wilson" tag appears on the left front tail. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays heavy wear throughout including a few areas of thinning fabric and a small number of tiny stains. Despite the lack of a year tag, this jersey can be accurately dated to the 1961-1969 time period due to the combination of the manufacturer's tag and the start of Ausbie's career. The style of Wilson tag on this jersey was only used by the company between the years 1959 and 1969, but Ausbie, who wore number "35" throughout his entire career with the Globetrotters, did not join the team until 1961. Geese Ausbie was one of the top entertainers on the Harlem Globetrotters and always a fan favorite during his twenty-four years with the team. In 1978 he replaced Meadowlark Lemon as the lead performer on the squad, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. In 1994 he became only one of twenty-eight former Globetrotters players and/or executives to receive a Legends ring, which is presented to those who have made a major contribution to the success and the development of the Globetrotters organization. Harlem Globetrotters jerseys of this vintage are highly desirable, especially those worn by a major star such as Ausbie. Graded A9 by MEARS (10 point base grade, but minus a half point each for the light stains and thinning of the fabric). It is a virtual certainty that this exceptional jersey originates directly from Ausbie's personal collection, which he sold years ago and which included several jerseys from his playing days. This is one of only four Geese Ausbie Harlem Globetrotters jerseys listed in the MEARS census, with two graded at this level and just one graded higher (A10). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
