1961-1962 Kahn's Wieners Basketball SGC-Graded Complete Set (13)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $11,163
Unbelievably high-grade complete thirteen-card set of 1961 Kahn’s Wieners basketball cards, highlighted by Hall of Famers Jerry West and Oscar Robertson. When this set arrived in our offices (ungraded), sent in by a very longtime collector, we were amazed by the condition. This is by far the finest set of 1961-62 Kahn's Weiners Basketball we have ever seen. REA submitted the entire set for grading, as we felt the extraordinary condition of the set warranted this investment in time and expense. The very scarce 1961-1962 Kahn's Weiners basketball set features twelve members of the Cincinnati Royals (including for the first time the Royals' coach) and also Los Angeles Lakers star Jerry West. One card was issued with each package of Kahn's meats. Because of the product with which they were packaged, heavy grease stains and creases are common with this issue, making it all the more difficult to assemble a high-grade set. All the cards are bright, crisp, and incredibly fresh across the board. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The SGC grades are as follows: Four MINT 96: Buckhalter, Embry, Wiesenhahn, and Wolf. One NM/MT+ 92: Bockhorn. Five NM/MT 88: Nordmann, Reed, Smith, Twyman, and West. Two NM+ 86: Boozer and Zeller. One NM 84: Robertson. This is a remarkably crisp high-grade set of this popular and attractive issue. The condition of this set (which has an average SGC grade exceeding NM/MT condition) is superior to even that of the number-one all-time finest set on the PSA Set Registry (which has an average grade of 7.65). Kahn's Wieners cards are far rarer than most 1960s basketball cards, and are one of the few food issues of the era. Total 13 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,163
