1887 N127 Duke "Sea Captains" SGC-Graded Complete Set (25)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233
Complete set of twenty-five 1887 N127 Duke "Sea Captains" cards, all graded and encapsulated by SGC. Rarely offered high-grade complete set of these extremely popular and colorful tobacco cards, with seventeen cards ranging from Vg to Ex, six are Gd, and two lesser. This is an extremely strong set across the board, with almost all cards having a far superior appearance to the harsh SGC assigned grades (as is often the case with nineteenth-century tobacco cards). In addition to being one of nineteenth-century nonsport collecting's most beautiful and highly regarded large-style tobacco-card sets, this is also a particularly fascinating set with reference to content, with great significance to American culture in the nineteenth-century. Back in the 1880s, being a sea captain was not a profession that was only found in works of fiction; it was a glamourous and exciting profession that elicited awe in youngsters and adults alike, and that had a status similar to that of decorated military generals, or astronauts of the Cold War era. This is truly a set from another time, now long forgotten, when being a sea captain was of such great prominence that members of this profession warranted being the subject of this magnificently designed tobacco card set. The SGC grades are as follows: One EX+ 70: McMickan. Four EX 60: Freeth, Irving, Land, and Perry. Seven VG/EX 50: Barre, Condron, Gleadell, Leist, Munro, Santelli, and Willigerod. Five VG 40: Bussius, Price, Sargent, Urquhart, and Watkins. Six GOOD 30: Brooks, Cook, D'Hauterive, Frangeul, Hains, and Murray. One FAIR 20: Randle. One Authentic: Sumner. This exceptionally colorful set was issued with Duke's Honest Long Cut tobacco brand. Each card (2-7/8 x 4-1/4 inches) features a portrait image of a famous sea captain, with his vessel's name and picture, and the shipping company and flag for which he sailed. A checklist and advertisement for Duke's Honest Long Cut Smoking & Chewing Tobacco appears on the reverse of each card. This is an extremely attractive set, with fascinating subject matter, and with outstanding eye-appeal. The set is one of the key sets from the collection of an very advanced old-time nonsport collector. This very scarce issue is rarely seen as a complete set, and is highly prized by both nineteenth-century historical collectors and nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total 25 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,233
