1933 R74 Goudey Indian Gum Premiums Collection (4)

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $1,410

Collection of four incredibly rare R74 Goudey Indian Gum premiums. These full-color large-format premiums were issued in conjunction with the R73 1933 Goudey Indian Gum series. These are four of the very premiums listed on the 1933 Goudey Indian wrappers as "fine art prints" and "Pictures of Famous Indians" available by mail in exchange for fifty wrappers each. They are extremely rare! In fact, these are the very first examples we have handled. The beautiful artwork and rich color of the premiums make them one of the most striking and distinctive of all 1930s issues. The collection of four Goudey Indian premiums consists of the following: Buffalo Body, Clears Up, Jim Blood, and Yellow Head. In the lower margins of each premium is the credit to the original artist (famous Indian painter Winold Reiss, as noted on the Goudey wrappers) and copyright information. Because of their large size, these premiums are easily damaged. This is an impressive group in terms of eye-appeal for Indian Gum premiums, technically grading approximately Good with pinholes in corners, but with a much stronger overall appearance. These premiums are not Indian portraits cut from the Great Northern RY calendars (that also featured Winold Reiss portraits of Indians). These are strictly Goudey premiums available by mail in exchange for wrappers. Also of note is the special provenance of this group: These four premiums were purchased by our consignor directly from legendary nonsport collector and dealer Hugh Jones. Four stunning examples of one of Goudey and nonsport collecting's rarest gum-premium issues. Dimensions: approximately 8-1/4 x 10-5/8 inches. Total 4 premiums. Reserve $800. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,410
