1939 R156 Gum, Inc. "True Spy Stories" Complete Set (24): #2 SGC Set Registry
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,115
This is an extremely high grade complete set of this fascinating and very scarce 1930s nonsport-card issue, which features scenes and text illustrating the history of espionage from the days of the American Civil War to World War II. "This is a True Spy Story. The names of some of the characters have been changed in order not to embarrass the government." This announcement appears at the top of the reverse of each of the twenty-four cards in Gum, Inc.'s thrilling "True Spy" story cards. This outstanding set was assembled many years ago by a extremely condition-conscious connoisseur of 1930s nonsports cards. This set was consigned to REA ungraded, and was submitted for grading by REA. The entire set of twenty-four cards has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The complete SGC condition composite: Nine EX/NM 80: #1, 4, 10, 12, 15, 19, 20, 21, and 24. Four EX+ 70: #7, 9, 14, and 16. Six EX 60: #3, 5, 8, 11, 18, and 22. Three VG/EX 50: #2, 6, and 17. Two VG 40: #13 and 23. The fascinating subject matter and vivid artwork have always made this set a favorite with collectors. This is a very attractive high-grade complete set, with all cards bright and clean, and with an overall appearance far superior to that suggested by the technically accurate assigned grades. Total 24 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,115
