1947 R773 Indian Gum Complete Set (96) Plus Wrapper
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,528
Very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set of ninety-six cards: 72% range from Ex to Nr/Mt (with a few Nr/Mt-Mt), 28% Vg to Vg-Ex. Six cards have been graded by PSA (#26 NM 7, 57 NM-MT 8, 58 NM-MT 8 [oc], 64 EX 5, 70 EX-MT 6, and 80 EX-MT 6). The set is accompanied by an original Indian Gum wrapper (Ex). This is a fascinating and very historic set. Goudey Gum attempted to reenter the bubble-gum card market following WWII, reprinting in 1947 ninety-six cards from one of its most successful sets of the 1930s, "Indian Gum." The fronts feature the very same artwork of the Indian Gum cards issued by Goudey in the 1930s. The reverses have a slightly different design than their 1930s counterparts, and are printed in black ink (as opposed to the green ink of the 1930s issue). Goudey's 1947 efforts were apparently not very successful as they were never heard from again. This series represents Goudey's very last card set. If this set had been a hit, we might have seen Goudey battling with Topps and Bowman in the bubble-gum card wars of the early 1950s! This is a very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set of this colorful and historically extremely significant final Goudey issue. Total 97 items (96 cards plus one wrapper). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,528
