Circa 1935 Bee Bee Confection Co. "Big 3 Gum" Original Wax Box with 94 Unopened Packs

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,175

Extremely unusual nonsport display box issued by the Bee Bee Confection Co. of Dayton, Ohio, entitled "Big 3 Gum," from circa 1935, with ninety-four original unopened one-cent wax packs. This box originally held 100 one-cent wax packs. The ninety-four packs have been stored untouched in the original display box since the 1930s. Each pack contains a slab of gum (the equivalent of three traditional sticks of gum attached) and one canceled foreign postage stamp. This product treats stamps as "little cards." While it was certainly more economical for the Bee Bee Confection Co. to include stamps in gum packs rather than elaborately produced trading cards, the fact is that stamp collecting was extremely popular in this era, even more so than today among youngsters, and Bee Bee Confection was responding to that great national interest . Even FDR was a noted stamp collector! Packs are all unopened, in the original display box, in Excellent or better condition, with only normal packing and storage wear. (Sometimes in the manufacturer's packaging process a pack can have a tiny corner tear or minor imperfection.) The display box (which has printing on the side flaps but is otherwise very nondescript) has various imperfections (pieces missing and tape on the lid and side panels split on three corners). It is extremely rare to find complete or near-complete boxes of any 1930s nonsport products in original unopened form. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,175
