1940 R50 Goudey "First Column Defenders" Pack Collection (2)
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $588
Two packs of First Column Defenders Chewing Gum, issued by The Goudey Gum Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Twenty-four cards make up the set, which is designated R50 in the standard reference guides. As Goudey notes on the back of the wrapper, the purpose of this issue was to "kindle a deeper sense of Patriotism by portraying the Ideals and Principles on which our Country is founded." Each pack originally contained one stick of gum and one card, but it is clear from handling the packs that one of them has been opened and resealed and the gum has been removed. The wrapper on this opened pack bears a pencil notation on the reverse that reads "10-16-40," a small border tear (of no consequence), and is otherwise in Excellent condition. The second pack, which is unopened with gum, displays moderate to heavy wear, and has a significant tear in the lower left corner. This is a rare Goudey wrapper that we do not recall offering before. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $588
