1909 D380-1 Clement Bros. Bread Near-Complete Set (7 of 8)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,700

Near-complete set of 1909 D380-1 Clement Bros. Bread cards, seven of eight cards, missing only Batch for completion. This extremely rare bakery set was regionally issued only in Rochester, New York, one card per loaf. Each card features a member of the Rochester team of the Eastern League. Even sample cards from this set are rarely seen. We have only seen one complete set of D380-1 ever offered (which appeared as Lot 325 in REA's May 2008 auction). These cards were saved by our consignor, a lifelong collector who lives in Rochester, New York, and who has specialized in collecting Rochester-related baseball cards and memorabilia for the past three decades. There comes a time to sell everything, and through this auction he will pass the torch to another collector who hopefully will someday complete this rare set. We have submitted the entire near-set to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Many of the cards in this group have an appearance superior to their technically accurate grades. The reverse of each card has advertising for Clement Bros. bakery's bread and pies. The SGC condition report is as follows: Anderson (POOR 10), Butler (FAIR 20), Holly (POOR 10), Holmes (GOOD 30), McConnell (VG 40), Osborn (VG 40), and Pattee (GOOD 30). Though the cards in this set vary in grade, several cards are particularly strong, and most of even the lowest-graded examples have tremendous eye-appeal. Total 7 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,700
