1909-1910 E97 C. A. Briggs Co. Cy Young - Boston
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,115
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Boston team variation. Very attractive mid-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young from this extremely rare candy issue. This is a particularly interesting card as the image on the card is actually Cy Young's brother, Irv Young. This 30-card set was issued in 1909-1910 by the C. A. Briggs Co. This set is closely related to several other candy sets from the era, which share the same format, and, in many cases, the same player image. The cards are very similar in design to their E93 counterparts and can most easily be distinguished by the attractive brown-printed checklist of the complete set and the advertisement for "C. A. Briggs Co., Lozenge Makers, Boston, Mass." along the bottom on the reverse of each card. As is the case with most 1910-era tobacco and “E” card issues, E97 C. A. Briggs Company cards each measure approximately 1.5 x 2.75 inches. The offered card has a brilliant image, with striking colors, even wear on the corners, and is centered to the left (approximately 25/75), with one tiny corner crease in upper right and one barely detectable light horizontal crease visible only from the back. The back is also bright and fairly clean, with bold brown text. In exceptionally fine condition for a caramel card, this is a very attractive, interesting, and rarely offered card of Cy Young from the very scarce E97 Briggs Co. set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,115
