1909-1911 T206 White Border "Gamblers" PSA-Graded Collection (7)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058

Collection of all five Hal Chase poses and two "Black Sox" members (Cicotte and Gandil) from the classic T206 White Border series, each graded and encapsulated by PSA. Chase, Cicotte, and Gandil were, in fact, major stars of the day, but their involvement with gambling and with unsavory characters undermined their legend, and ensured that they would forever remain "non-Hall of Famers." 1) Hal Chase Holding trophy pose (Sweet Caporal reverse), graded VG-EX 4. Bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, flawless registration, a little corner wear, and centered approximately 60/40 left to right. 2) Hal Chase Blue background portrait (El Principe De Gales reverse), graded EX 5. Perfectly clean both front and back, with a striking and flawless bold blue background, a crisp image, even wear on the corners, and perfectly centered. 3) Hal Chase Pink background portrait (Piedmont reverse), graded VG 3. Centered to the left, with evenly rounded corners, some surface wear, no creases, and perfectly clean reverse. 4) Hal Chase Dark cap pose (Sweet Caporal reverse), graded EX-MT 6. Bright and crisp, with even wear to all four corners, bold colors, and centered to the right. 5) Hal Chase White cap pose (Sweet Caporal reverse), graded EX 5. Centered to the top right, with even wear on the corners. 6) Ed Cicotte (Sweet Caporal reverse), graded VG-EX 4. Future "Black Sox." Well centered, with even wear to the corners, no creases. 7) Chick Gandil (Sweet Caporal), graded VG-EX 4. Future "Black Sox." Well centered, with bold colors, no creases, and even wear to the corners. This is a very attractive medium- to high-grade collection of classic tobacco cards, featuring all five Hal Chase cards and two "Black Sox" members in the T206 set. This is a very sharp-looking group of cards of significant players who were great, but will forever be remembered for gambling-related scandals that years later led to their banishment from the game. The SMR value for six of the seven cards (not including the Chase, pink, VG 3) is $1,015. Total 7 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,058
