1909-1911 M101-2 The Sporting News Near-Complete Set Including Cobb, Jackson, and Wagner (79 Different)
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $4,700
Collection of seventy-nine different (of the 100 in the set) M101-2 Sporting News supplements, highlighted by twenty-seven Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Joe Jackson. These supplements, which were distributed in issues of The Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913, are one of the most intriguing and distinctive sets of the era, and are among the finest large-format baseball issues of the early twentieth century. Exactly one hundred different supplements were issued during that span. Few early baseball issues are as ideal for display, and many of the photos used are unique to this set. Because they are printed on thin stock, M101-2s are typically found with various flaws that often allow for them to be technically defined as low grade, while actually displaying at a much higher appearance level. That is the case with many premiums in this collection. Most are very impressive visually, but have various mostly small imperfections (small tears, chips, creases, etc.) that have a significant impact on grades, which technically range from Poor to Very Good, averaging Good. Included are a few that are very rough, but some of these, including Hall of Famers, display as Excellent! The collection consists of the following: 1909: Bresnahan (HOF), Cy Young (HOF)/Criger, Mathewson (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Chance (HOF), Walsh (HOF), Rucker, Wagner (HOF), Jennings (HOF), B. Johnson (HOF), Collins (HOF), McAleer, Bell, Speaker (HOF), Brown (HOF), Chase, Leach, and Bush. 1910: Evers (HOF), Joss (HOF), Overall, Crawford (HOF), Merkle, Mullin, Konetchy, Gibson/Raymond, Cobb/Wagner (HOF), Mack (HOF), Evans/O'Loughlin/Klem/Johnston, Plank (HOF), Kling, Baker (HOF), Dooin, Carrigan, Coombs, Tinker (HOF), Taylor, Ford, Cole, Lord, Hofman, Wallace (HOF), and McGraw (HOF). 1911: Davis, Archer, Thomas, Byrnes, Milan, Bescher, Barry, Schulte, White, Doyle, Joe Jackson, Marquard (HOF), Alexander (HOF), Gainor, Snodgrass, Callahan, Harmon, and Stovall. 1912: Wheat (HOF), Bodie, Stahl, Wood, C. Wagner, Ritchie, Griffith (HOF), Hauser, Herzog, Lavender, Tesreau, and Hermann. 1913: Daubert, Lobert, Demaree, Fletcher, and Birmingham. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. M101-2 Sporting News premiums are large, fragile, and easily damaged. For this issue, this is a very impressive-looking group. This collection represents an extremely substantial start toward a very difficult to complete set. Overall very consistent and reasonably uniform in grade throughout, with many having far superior eye-appeal than their technically accurate grades. It is difficult to assign an auction estimate for this lot since these supplements are rarely seen in such large groups, the break value is substantial, and there are so many Hall of Famers. Dimensions: each approximately 9.75 x 8 inches. Total: 79 supplements. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,700
