1910 Philadelphia Athletics Team-Composite Postcard
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $705
We have never seen this extremely striking postcard before. This rare and unusually designed postcard of the 1910 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics features composite images of twenty-three team members including manager Connie Mack, Frank "Home Run" Baker, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Eddie Collins, Jack Barry, Jack Coombs, Harry Davis, and Rube Oldring. It is interesting to note that the images of the players are not all to scale, which is one of the factors that makes the composite image as a whole appear so unusual. Each player is identified in black lettering along the base and the notation "Athletics, American League Champions, 1910" is printed on the top border. This club marked the beginning of the American League's first great dynasty. The Philadelphia Athletics won four pennants and three World Series titles between the years 1910 to 1914. Based upon the wording along the top border, this card was obviously issued just prior to the club's World Series victory over the Cubs. The A's were famous for producing various team composite photos during this period, both on postcards and larger displays. This is the first example of this particular composite photo that we have ever seen on any piece. The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches) has never been mailed and displays a few minor creases, as well as moderate corner wear. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $200+.
