1910 E125 American Caramel Die-cuts Pittsburgh Pirates Collection (6)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $3,525

Collection of six E125 American Caramel Die-cuts, each representing a player from the Pittsburgh Pirates (six of the nine for a complete team subset), and all graded and encapsulated by SGC: Babe Adams (VG 40, looks nicer, downgraded due to a couple extremely tiny surface abrasions on his chest and near his left arm; VG is actually a pretty strong grade for E125s), Bobby Byrne (Authentic, no numerical grade due to its missing the stand-up flaps on the bottom, otherwise Vg), George Gibson (Authentic, no numerical grade due to its missing the stand-up flaps on the bottom, otherwise Vg-Ex), Tommy Leach (GOOD 30, downgraded by SGC due to several tiny chips of surface paper loss on his cap, otherwise Ex), Dots Miller (GOOD 30, downgraded due to a few tiny surface chips, which are characteristic of E125s, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), and Owen Wilson (VG 40). The stand-up flaps are intact on four of the six cards and have never even been folded back. Distributed by the American Caramel Co. circa 1910, this set of die-cuts is so rare that it was not even catalogued until the late 1960s. They were apparently issued one card per box of caramels, and vary slightly in size from card to card, depending on the player’s pose. Most are approximately 7 inches high and 4 inches wide. The cards are designed with small moving parts, which fold back to allow players to stand. This is an attractive group of these almost-never-seen early candy cards, which have an unparalleled display value, and are held in the highest regard by serious collectors of 1910-era candy cards. Total 6 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525
